Twist Print vs Tharstern

Tharstern is a long-established British print MIS with a genuinely strong reputation among UK and Irish printers, deep rules-based workflow automation, and one of the best-documented open APIs in the category. It has been part of eProductivity Software (ePS) since March 2023.

WHERE THARSTERN IS STRONG

Tharstern earned its reputation honestly. Its open REST API is properly documented down to a public Swagger endpoint — better than most of this category manages — and its rules-based automation, imposition and JDF workflow integrations are real engineering, not brochure copy. It holds 4.4/5 across 38 public reviews and names its customers openly. If you run a UK or Irish shop with Windows infrastructure already in place, it is a credible system.

WHERE TWIST WINS

Three gaps decide it for most shops outside the UK. Tharstern is hybrid, not cloud — full job management and reporting still need Windows, and Mac users are told to run Parallels. It publishes no pricing at all, with a five-licence minimum quoted only after a sales call. And as of August 2026 no public source documents a single Tharstern-specific AI or machine-learning feature; the automation is rules-based. Twist runs entirely in the browser, publishes every price, and ships an AI estimator trained on 2.4 million real quotes.

THE DECIDING QUESTION

If your shop is in Latin America or bills in Spanish, this one is short: Tharstern is supplied in English with no documented Spanish edition and no Latin American e-invoicing. Twist invoices natively in Mexico, Chile, Peru, Colombia and Costa Rica.

Your MIS vendor got acquired. Again.

Who owns your roadmap?

Consolidators now own much of the print-MIS market: printIQ (Banyan Software, Aug 2022) and DocketManager (Banyan portfolio, new CEO Oct 2025); Avanti, Pace and PrintSmith inside CAI Software's Graphic Communications division after the EFI → ePS spin-out, Ricoh's June 2025 sale of Avanti, and the October 2025 ePS–CAI merger. That can mean stability. It can also mean your product's priorities are set by a portfolio, not by your industry. Twist Print is independent and founder-run: the people who built it still ship it, and the roadmap answers to printers.

Tharstern: the questions buyers ask

Does Tharstern have AI estimating?

No public source as of August 2026 documents a Tharstern-specific AI or machine-learning feature. Its estimating calculates from configured pricing policies and preferred production routes, and its automation is rules-based — both genuinely capable, but not AI. ePS uses “AI-driven” language at portfolio level rather than for Tharstern specifically. Twist Print's estimator is a proprietary AI layer trained on 2.4 million real print quotes.

Is Tharstern cloud-based?

Partly. ePS describes Tharstern as a hybrid MIS: role-specific applications run in a browser over a core that can be hosted or kept on-premise, and full job management and reporting still require Windows — Mac users are directed to Parallels. ePS's separate product Nubium is the one described as 100% cloud-native. Twist Print runs entirely in the browser on any device.

How much does Tharstern cost?

Tharstern does not publish prices. Pricing is modular and per-user, scoped after an initial call, with a documented minimum of five user licences. A £5.18/user/month figure appears on directory listings but is not confirmed on the vendor site and its scope is unexplained. Twist Print publishes every plan: $299 to $1,500 per month.

Who owns Tharstern?

eProductivity Software acquired Tharstern Group in March 2023. Tharstern is still actively sold under its own name within the ePS portfolio rather than folded into ePS Pace. Twist Print is independent and founder-run.

Does Tharstern support Spanish or Latin American invoicing?

Tharstern is supplied in English, with an option for customers to add their own translations — which is not the same as a vendor-supported Spanish edition. No public source documents compliance with Mexico CFDI, Chile, Peru or Colombia e-invoicing. Twist Print handles all of them natively.
